Low in calories and packed with tasty goodness, seafood is a fabulous way to boost your vow to jettison a few pounds. Here are six reasons why:
1. Fish are a great source of low-calorie protein with a lot of nutrition, but there are also other good-for-you foods that give you the most bang for your calorie buck. Almonds and macadamia nuts are a filling snack when you’re in the mood for something crunchy. Avocado and cheese are great alternatives to ice cream. If you must have some sugar, go for light yogurt or fresh fruit. When eating out, choose beans instead of rice, opt for veggies instead of fries, and just generally substitute nutrient-rich foods for their starchy counterparts whenever possible. (Maybe sneak a fry from your companion’s plate.)
2. At most restaurants, portion sizes are enormous. To keep yourself from the temptation to eat every last bite, ask the server to bring you a to-go container with your meal. Most will be happy to do it. Then, when your meal arrives, immediately scoop half of it into the container to take with you. You’ll still have plenty on your plate to feel satisfied and bonus: you have lunch for tomorrow.
3. If you have a sedentary job, try to take frequent breaks to get up and move around. Walk to the printer. Bring the coffee carafe around to everyone in the office. If you can’t leave your desk, stand instead of sit. If you can’t stand, fidget in your seat. Researchers call this kind of movement throughout the day Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, and believe that it contributes as much to your health as going to the gym.
4. For a little more Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, park farther away from the building when you go shopping, next to the new Jaguars, Cadillacs and Mercedes. Some people might think you drive a rare antique car, but even if they’re not fooled you’ll burn extra calories on your walk into the store.
5. Cheat if you must. If you blow your diet for one meal or skip a workout, that doesn’t have to mean total failure. You can always eat healthy at your next meal, and the gym will still be there tomorrow. Obviously, if you make a habit of cheating you won’t make much progress, but a little leniency now and then can help you stay with your weight loss goals over the long haul.
6. When you do go to the gym, include a few weight-bearing exercises. Building muscle helps your body burn calories even when at rest. It also makes you look awesome in spandex.
